to kill arriving deputies. >>> developing news in san jose where police continue to look for a killer. the man stabbed a woman to death yesterday afternoon just a few blocks from the santa clara county sheriff's office. john alston has more from north first street. >> the brutal stabbing happened in broad day light just after 2:30 in the afternoon in the parking lot next to the togo sandwich shop. matt was eating lunch when he heard a commotion and ran out to help the woman slashed on her neck and arms. >> i held her head up and kept pressure on it. i said, who did this? can you give me a name, any name? and she couldn't really talk. >> he, too, was covered in blood when the paramedics arrived. >> i feel it was horrible for her to have to die that way, and i just hope by me being there maybe it wasn't as bad way to die. >> he walked to north second street where he was doing handiwork and had to convince police he was not the killer. police say the real culprit hopped the fence and ran through this neighborhood where detectives found blood in front of some homes. the detectives came by

it happened at 6:45 this evening. police say san jose officers on special task force in plain clothes and driving unmarked vehicles were working a separate case when they spot add white 2 door honda that turned out to be stolen. neighbors say there was quake chase. >> we heard 3 cars come around ice cream truck really fast so we all came out of our houses. >>reporter: santa clare county sheriff's department says the driver of the stolen white honda threw it in reverse. >> suspect rammed 2 officer vehicle in reverse. accelerated forward. hit a parked car that was in the area. one of the officers at that time had already got out of the vehicle. that's when the suspect again tried to accelerate at high speed to the officer and officer opened fir fire. >> surrounded a car didn't hear anything like put your hands up or anything. just just heard 2 quick shots. pop pop. >>reporter: but police say the undercover officer fired only one shot. streaking the driver in the head and killing him. witness wondered if the suspect knew they were undercover police. >> he was clear the suspect k

followed by shootings in san francisco, san jose, union city. and then this morning officers again fired on a suspect, this time in hayward. that's where nbc bay area's monte francis is live tonight. monte? >> reporter: kris, good evening. police have cleared the scene here. but you can see behind me that a sign has been knocked over. this was a sign that was knocked over by the suspect's vehicle. and an investigation is under way to determine exactly what caused a man's death here this morning. this all unfolded about 3:30 a.m. when police say a suspect rammed his car into a police cruiser during a traffic stop. the officer opened fire into the suspect's honda, hitting a passenger in the car. the driver, a 23-year-old oakley man, sped off and crashed the car here at foothill boulevard and d street. the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, and it's knotts yet clear if the officer's bullets killed him or if the crash played a role in his deh. the driver is now in police custody. we just talked to the owner of a japanese restaurant here which is just yards from where the suspect's v
